US number facts

Country code+1
Mobile formatNorth American Numbering Plan: 10 digits, a 3-digit area code and a 7-digit number (NXX-NXX-XXXX). There is no mobile prefix: mobile, landline and VoIP numbers share the same area codes.
Example+1 202 555 0123 (555-0100 to 555-0199 are reserved by NANPA for fiction.)
Main carriersAT&T, T-Mobile US, Verizon. The three nationwide facilities-based carriers; regional carriers and MVNOs use their networks.
Number portabilityWireless number portability has existed since 2003–2004, so the area code says nothing about the current carrier or line type.
Prepaid SIM ruleNo federal law requires ID to buy a prepaid SIM. Bills proposed in 2010 (S.3427) and 2016 (H.R.4886) were never enacted; carriers apply their own policies.
VoIP numbersNo separate VoIP range. Since the FCC order 15-70 (effective January 11, 2016), VoIP providers obtain numbers directly in ordinary area codes, so services check the line type in carrier databases (for example Twilio Lookup, which returns mobile, fixedVoip or nonFixedVoip).

What should I know about US numbers?

The United States is where the VoIP question matters most. Because Google Voice, TextNow and app numbers sit in the same area codes as mobile phones, a sign-up form cannot tell them apart by looking at the digits. It queries a line-type database instead, and a number classed as "nonFixedVoip" is the one most often refused.

US carriers keep a disconnected residential number for 45 to 90 days before giving it to someone else (47 CFR 52.15). That is why a single-use number is not a number you keep: after its window it returns to circulation, and a later SMS to it may reach another customer.

US numbers are also the only ones offered as rentals here: 7 or 30 days, for one service or for any service, when you need the same number for later logins.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose the US area code?

Not at the moment: the order screen assigns an available US number. The area code does not affect whether a service accepts it, since US line type is read from carrier data, not from the digits.

Is a US non-VoIP number the same as a Google Voice number?

No. Google Voice numbers are classed as non-fixed VoIP; our US numbers are mobile lines on SIM cards.

Is a non-VoIP number always accepted?

No. A non-VoIP number is classed as mobile in carrier databases, which most sign-up forms accept, but each service sets its own rules and can still refuse a number. If that happens, cancel the order and the price goes back to your balance.

Do I need to verify my identity?

No. RealSIM Numbers asks for no ID, no selfie and no documents: an email and a password open an account. The acceptable use policy still applies to every order.
